Will somebody who has been making contributions in The Aba Engineer explain why there are so many religious contributions in this forum?
Today or recently I have been contemplating on what and what to do with word press....
I have been out of the web for sometime, I mean offline, although still communicating online using virtual machines as it were. I think we need to do something now.
Will we have EXCERPTS from a book or from books? Something to cover all of us in a good time before someone, you or somebody loses a job. How many more people will lose their jobs before the end of the meltdown era? Find out.

Will religion replace the profession of engineering? Will The Aba Engineer stop at first and second volumes. I must confess, I’m getting tried of editing “Call for Articles and submission of technical papers”. More so we in the Editorial Board are getting tried of waiting for you and your comments. Who can claim having made the first comment on “Organizational effects in industrial safety” by Eke Hilary or TQM? Who can locate the “notice board” in The Aba Engineers' blogspot.

Will the Nigerian Society of Engineers ever maintain a standard branch. Which one is a sample branch?
Will we have ethics of the engineering profession which will guide Engineers in pursuing level playing grounds even when other professions are involved.

Will Nigerian Engineers ever have a role to play in the solution of the crises in the Niger Delta area?

Will the gas flaring continue in the oil and gas sectors. Will Environmental Renewal Scheme for Aba metropolis go without a feedback. Is there any better alternative somewhere?

Or Are we all now waiting for the Town planners?.

What will the new National Building Code bring forth. Will the participating professions do the needful in ensuring a viable operation of the booklet.

Will our transport sector not see a new lease of life? When will train services return to Aba? Can’t we use fly-overs to get more engineering structures in the Enyimba city?

You can see I am now thinking aloud. Once more, my thoughts come back to much religious contradictions which tend to divide our profession. That should stop why?

ABSTRACT:   The distribution transformer is a major component of the electric power distribution network. Its availability (uptime) and service life is therefore of great importance.
The loss of life estimation of the distribution transformer in the Nigeria electric power system is an enabling frame work to proper application of transformers in the different locations of the vast Nigerian electric power system.
The service life of the distribution transformer is estimated to be between 20 – 30 years. The wide range is due to different parameters employed by utilities in the estimation of loss of life.
Temperature rise is the main factor affecting the ageing of the winding insulation and eventually the transformer life.
With a good system monitoring and maintenance, the distribution transformer can be made to serve beyond its estimated life. ___________________________________________________________________________

Abstract :    This paper presents a methodology which is useful in computing life cycle cost (LCC) of the Nigeria electric power stations. The methodology covers the application techniques to power plant LCC, using mean time between failures, mean time to repair, availability, net present worth etc. The LCC analysis was used to assess the economic consequences of decision making when buying pumps by comparing three pumps in alternative arrangements in Ogorode Power Station, Sapele:-
Practical implications
Life Cycle Costs (LCC) analysis is the most rational and objective method for selecting the optimum power plant system for power station plant facility. Through LCC analysis, all factors that influence total system cost can be identified and quantified, such as fuel cost. Component reliability, maintenance costs repairs and replacement costs are also included. A life cycle cost analysis does not need to be too complex to yield reasonably accurate figures for first and operational costs. LCC can give an order-of magnitude appraisal to help determine which alternative among the options to choose. LCC factors that influence power station system design can be broken into three categories: design factors , economic factors, and performance factors. Sometimes other factors must be considered, for example, a functional- use factor may be developed based on efficiency studies of personnel in the operations of different electric power stations personnel LCCs are very high, the more functional a design of system is, the more LCC savings are possible.

Introduction: In engineering project work, which might be a project or production of goods, quality, safety and cost are always maintained and balanced for a project to be viable and feasible. In most cases corners are cut to achieve quality to the detriment of cost. Cost of production is also in very many cases minimized to maximize profit to the detriment of quality and safety. In all these an engineer stands between maximizing profit at the end of the economic evaluation and analysis of his technical project or engineering work and applying his seasoned knowledge in the noble profession with which he has an oath to uphold its integrity by carefully making sure that his engineering work is optimally and intrinsically safe for its risers. Clients always focus on the profit side of the game, the engineer always consider the ethics of his profession and satisfaction of his client while the public always look upon projects that will be relieving to their sufferings. When a medical doctor makes a mistake while in the theater, only a single soul is lost, but when an engineer makes a mistake either on design or in production, loses are generated instead of profits, houses collapse, poisons are produced instead of foods and bombs are produced instead of home appliances. Hence the engineering profession is a very sensitive one.
Highlighted and briefly discussed below are the business, ethical and legal issues will bring sanity to quality engineering work without comprising safety and cost.

ABSTRACT- Bridges being capital intensive projects deserve professional dexterity and proficiency in their designs and constructions. Recent developments have shown that the dearth of hydraulic considerations in bridge design and construction have impacted negatively on the structure with such attendant consequences as bridge collapse, submerging of bridge deck, flooding of riverine areas and adjoining roads. Hydraulic considerations in the design and construction of bridges, will reduce the scouring of the river bed and banks to the barest minimum. It will keep the functionality of the bridge at its best state and make the bridge piers, and abuttments safe and stable. When adequate hydraulic considerations are made, the durability, functionality, stability, safety and the overall quality of the bridge are enhanced and secured.

Abstract: Corrosion from rust at pipe supports is one of the threats/hazards leading to process piping failure. In most cases it results to fatalities to health, people and environment.

Electricity generation and consumption have always been a basic platform for economic growth which also influences the taste of the citizens of every country the world over; thus any means of generating more energy for the populace has always been taken with keen interest by any responsible government. Nigeria had gone through an untold hardship in order to get their electricity consumption pattern met by the national grid. This has led the present administration in the country to toy with idea of deregulating the utility company to the private participation in the industry to seek a form of energy source(s) that would improve the present level of electricity. This becomes more glaring as poverty and unemployment increasingly continue to wreak havoc on the society unmitigated. Our production companies experiences heavy losses due to power failure when on production, especially those companies working with precision and design fabrication. The paper has carefully studied the situation on ground and has offered a few acceptable practices in rural and urban electrification for national empowerment.

Why Women Are Few In The Field Of Engineering In Nigeria

What Is Engineering?

Engineering according to the Oxford dictionary, "is the application of science for the control and use of power especially by the use of machine, technology work or profession of an engineer”. Therefore an engineer/ess is one who works in any branch of engineering- a person who design engines, machines, bridges, railways buildings etc.

There is a saying which says “woman and machine don’t work together” and in this case women often find it difficult to work with machine maybe because of fear of its difficulty as it is a strenuous field.

Faking of the field is much in the Nigeria as road side mechanics go by the field's title. Any body who handles machines in Nigeria whether trained or not, whether educated or not, goes with the name "Engineer", so women hate such faking.

The difficulties experienced by engineers in opening their own companies or industries could also be another hindrance. As it takes a huge sum of money to open an industry, woman may not like to go into such profession.

Unemployment is another stumbling block. Engineers are not easily employed and those employed, if they loose their job, they find it difficult to get another one. More especially some few women who read engineering are not easily employed by most of these industries and companies as they fear that because they are woman they may not be able to handle the job squarely like their male counterparts, which is not supposed to be for “what a man can do a woman can do even better.”

Again there is no respect to engineers as "cheap workers" are preferred to engineers in Nigeria, leading to several collapse of buildings, bridges,structures etc. This also could be a hindrance as women love respect.

Difficulties experienced in gaining admission into the university to read the course could be another reason. Moreover many women dread the course because it is difficult and science oriented.Also woman who are interested in the profession are quickly discouraged by the society’s reactions to their decision as, they will not want them "women engineers" to work for them.

The Role Of Engineering Professional Bodies In Ensuring Continuing Livelihood For Young Engineering Professionals In Nigeria
Introduction:
The professional bodies are the umbrellas of any professional which Engineering as one of the noblest professions is not left out. COREN-Council For The Regulation Of Engineering In Nigeria and NSE-The Nigerian Society Of Engineers, with order sub-professional bodies are the shields under which the career of a newly hatched engineer are developed and guided for him to be useful and functional in the society where he lives and equally looked upon as a born problem solver. The enrollment into these professional bodies make the young engineer to appreciate his profession, become dedicated and live within the professional ethics and at the same time uphold the code of conduct. In engineering there are several professional bodies that help to sharpen and regulate the profession through repositioning the steps of its members in accordance and synchrony to the economic, social and technological needs of the public and development objectives and strategies of the government, non governmental agencies and allied parastatals. Stated and discussed below are the various ways through which COREN, NSE, NSChE, APWEN, ACEN, FIDIC etc among order professional bodies governing the engineering profession could help the young engineers and other members have a sustainable source of livelihood in a midst of the almost disappearing paid-employment. pp
1. Development of local standard:
In his inaugural speech, the 25th president of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Engr. E.M. Ezeh (FNSE) marshalled out some of the steps which his leadership committee will apply to take NSE to an enviable height. The development of the local standards being one of his steps to achieve this is a welcome development. This will go along way in speeding up the rate at which engineering projects are executed. With the local standard available on the table of the young and old practicing engineers, success in self-employment will be achieved with effortless ease. This is one of the strategic and very important tools required by the young engineers and consulting fellows to say good bye to paid-employment.

2. Organization and funding of seminars, workshops and technical paper presentation:
When the professional bodies organizes seminars, workshops and technical papers presentation with the experienced practicing senior engineers who has renowned track record as the resource persons, there will be a double promotion of self-employment. First and less targeted benefit will be to the resource persons who are also a member of the professional body as he will be financially benefited as well as personally developed. Moreover, the recipients including the young engineers will acquire skill, scientific knowledge and be kept abreast of the most recent technological advanced techniques that will encourage self development.

3. Engineering salary scale:
With the introduction and close monitoring of the implementation of a standard engineering salary scale, the sky will be the limit of engineers as it will help the ones who are already in paid-employment to raise money and go into self-employment because one of the most militating factors dragging the consulting engineering backwards is poor financial base of the consulting engineers. But with the good engineering salary scale, one can easily raise enough funds to start his own engineering firm and equally acquire sophisticated engineering equipment to enable him handle more challenging projects which the nation spends huge amount of money in inviting foreign companies to execute. With the above financial state, he can equally hire young engineers and offer them the required training. The only time to do this is now and it is the professional bodies that will bell the cat.
4. Compulsory post graduate retraining:
Organizing compulsory post graduate training and encouraging continuous professional education for the engineers is a veritable tool for professional self independence. An engineer who does not receive fresh training and technical growth will easily be phased out in his practice. Therefore it will be of high importance for the professional bodies to subject every engineer to Mandatory, Continuing and Professional Development and training and retraining to help bring them to the same par with their mates in the developed countries who are honoured in Nigeria as Kings of Technology. This will help Nigerian Engineers not to rely on paid employment.
5. Documentation of engineering projects:
The documentation of engineering projects will help the young engineers to benefit from the lessons thereof. There are so many magnificent and wonderful engineering projects standing tall today in Nigeria without any documentation by both NSE and COREN. This starves the young engineers the lessons which they could have learnt from such projects. Therefore, it is very encouraging to the young engineers and practicing engineers to be provided with the documented forms of virtually all powerful engineering projects which would be very useful as reference projects. The professional bodies are expected to be at the frontline to achieve this.

If the professional bodies should do all these and little more, I strongly believe that self employment will not be a heart pounding issue again in our country (Nigeria) for the almost hopeless young engineers.

THE INDUCTION OF NEW CORPORATE MEMBERS HELD ON SATURDAY 27TH JUNE 2009: At The Branch's Secretariat.

Induction of new corporate members is a bi~annual event hosted by NSE Aba branch to formally welcome our new members in to the branch. The first tier induction for 2009 was held at the branch secretariat situated at the Ministry of works compound, Ikot~Ekpene Road, Aba on 27th june 2009. Opening:The programme started around 11.00am due to the nationwide sanitation exercise with an opening prayer from Engr. PURPOSE OF VISIT was to see the existing power generation infrastructure in Afam Power Station.

Members of the Nigerian Society Of Engineers, Aba Branch left the Secretariat at Aba Owerri Road, Aba at about 10:20am and arrived at the power station by 11:15am. The journey made by road was a successful one without any accident recorded.
The group meet the Managing Director of the power station after a brief handover at the security post. There was a general introduction after which the Managing Director handed us over to Mr. Olajide Onwuachu, a staff of the power station.
The Managing director told the group that he cannot be available to take us round the plant because he is supposed to have an urgent meeting as of that moment. As such we were taken round the plant for site seeing with two of the operations Engineers at the station.Mr.Onwuachu Olajide and his team members took the NSE Aba Branch members through,during the walk round in the power plant, the group was told that the power station was designed with an initial capacity of 700mw but presently they are not operating at full capacity.
The group were told that the power generation station were built in phases Afam 1, Afam 2, Afam 3, Afam 4 and Afam 5 and they all together has up to 20 gas turbines. Some of this gas turbines for example Afam 1 has become obsolete because of Non availability of spare parts.
Afam 1, installed in 1962 has three gas turbines GT1, GT2, and GT3 . Afam 4, installed in 1984 has six gas turbines of 6 x 6.75 mega-watt capacity. Afam 5, installed in 2001/2002 with a capacity of 138 x 2 mega-watts was found functioning at the time of our visit. It uses associated gas got from shell wells, purified and supplied at a lost and it uses the latest technology (Computerized).
The visit ended with an interactive section in which question and answers were entertained with refreshments. During this section a lot of questions were asked. The questions includes but not limited to :
Q1. Why can Nigeria not pose of a regular 3 hrs power supply while Niger that got there’s from Nigeria has 24 hrs regular supply.
Ans. It was a pact that was signed between Nigeria and Niger to prevent Niger from tampering with the flow of River Niger which is very important to Nigeria.
Q2. What can you tell us about the new policy power generation, transmission and distribution system.
Ans. It will not work because the price at which government wants us to sell power is far below the cost of its production. It is better that Government allows generators to fix their price based on cost of production than to determine price before production.
Q3. What is the problem that you people are encountering in your operations.
Ans. Underfunding. Our allocation is far below what is needed to run the plant.

CALL For ARTICLES And SUBMISSION OF TECHNICAL PAPERS

The Nigerian Society Of Engineers ABA Branch is now accepting articles and technical papers for publication in The Aba Engineer. There is no deadline for submission. Share your ideas and insight in The Aba Engineer and see how it goes. It offers abstract-selected papers in current need areas related but not limited to technology, science, energy matters, core engineering maintenance strategies and policy.

INSTRUCTION FOR THE PREPARATION OF PAPERS

1. Language: English 1.1 3 or 7 pages – regular pages

2. MANUSCRIPT: Manuscript should be typed in 10 points times New Roman font or equipment on 8.5 x 11 inches or A4 size paper. Leaving a ¾ inch margin on each side and at the top of all but the first page. Spacing for the top of the first page should be 1.5 inches . Spacing at the bottom for 8.5 x 11 paper should be ¾ and should be 1.25 inches for A4 paper. The title and author information is to be centered across the top of the first page and then a two column format is to be followed for the balance of the paper.

3. Manuscripts should be single- spaced with 1.5 line spacing between paragraph indentations. Allow an extra half space above a line containing superscripts and below a line containing subscripts.

4. The paper should include: a. Title (10 words maximum length)

b. Author’s name affiliation, and present address.

c. Abstract (maximum of 300 words)

d. A maximum of six keys words

e. A clearly written introduction to explain the nature of the problem, previous work, purpose and contribution of the paper. f. A conclusion section must be included and should indicate clearly the advantages, limitations and possible applications.

5. Scanned diagrams and photographs must be of high quality. Diagrams and lettering must be either computer-designed or made using India ink (drafted) and of course scanned ready and sent by attachment if not embedded in the text. Scanned photograph of diagram is acceptable, but photocopies are not.

6. Scanned photographs should preferably be pasted in one column appropriately to flow with the pages.

7. Reference should be quoted in the text with a number in square brackets, for example [1] and should be numbered according to the order cited in the manuscript. Two acceptable forms of referencing are:

a. Paper: author, title, journal or newsmagazine volume, number, issue number and year, inclusive pages. For example:

STRESS MANAGEMENT: THE OTHER DIMENSION TO SAFETY AT THE ENGINEER’S WORKPLACE 1. INTRODUCTION:

Every engineer is made to imbibe safety education at the engineering school. The engineer therefore enters the workplace intellectually equipped to manage hazards of the profession. Most engineering establishments, not only take their staff through repeated safety orientations, seminars and workshops but go a step to establish a department charged with the responsibility for safety magement.

These measures are put in place to equip the engineer with appropriate skill to enable him work safely today, so he can live to work tomorrow.

The engineers work in not only hazardous but equally stressful.

Incidentally, little effort is made to equip the engineer with skills that will enable him cope with the stress associated with his work.

THE 14TH ENGINEERING ASSEMBLY

The Council For The Regulation Of Engineering In Nigeria (COREN) held her 14th Enginerring Assembly from 20th – 22nd September 2005 at the International Conference Centre in Abuja . The Assembly which has its theme as “Engineering Education, Practice and Regulation, the Nigerian Situation” Attracted many Engineering personnel and dignitaries from Government, Industry and Academia. Notable among these were the Special Guest of Honour Engr. Chief Olusegun Obasanjo,FNSE,GCFR, President Federal Republic of Nigeria who was represented by then Honourable Minister of Works, Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe and Gen. Dr. Yakubu Gowon (rtd),GCFR, former Head of State and Commander – in – Chief of the Armed forces of Nigeria who was also the Chairman of the opening ceremony.
At the assembly, seven papers were presented as follows.

6. Engineering, Education, Practice and Regulation: The place of industrial training and Internship . By Engr. Prof. M. O. Faborode.
7. Engineering Regulation .By Engr. Prof. Olumide Ajose.

Engr. C. E B. Chukwuogo Presented an excellent paper with a bias to Development of Appropriate Technology. He emphasized the need for provision of enabling environment for manpower development through increased and continued financing of appropriate technology development. By the Federal and State governments and encouraging private sector participation in the development of this sector. A thought – provoking paper by Dr. Anthony Maduekwe noted that considerable large input would be required in the Engineering Education, Practice and Regulation in support of both technological and economic growth of the country. He suggested a number of measures and steps that should be adopted to meet with the ever-increasing technological requirement of the nation. Other resource persons, made exciting presentations that stressed on the need to facilitate the realization of the goals for the establishment of COREN.
They also proffered solutions to some of the depressing problems in the educational sectors and appealed to both COREN and NSE to take the advantage of what sience and technology has to offer to improve the quality of life. They also noted with dismay the poor quality of education given to young engineers and called for improvement of their skill level and orientation.
Generally, the papers presented at the Engineering Assembly should be of great interest and value to engineers, technogists, technicians, crasltsment, government and private sector and constitutes a valuable reference to keep at breast with government reforms and initiatives. The Gateway State will play host to the cream of the nations engineering community as the Engineers converge for the yearly National engineering conference and annual general meeting (AGM). Already the NSE has constituted a conference planning committee to see to the smooth hosting of the event. elected during the Kano 2005 National AGM / Conference. Also after a keenly contested election, Engr Babagana Mohammed, Engr. Dr. C.C. Katchy an Engr. M. The chairman of Karisto Industrial systems Ltd hit the break- through. Point in 182, when he commenced the development and production of Automatic Mains Failure (AMF), which is a solution to the unsteady power supply in the country. For example all the switch years in use at the Sam Mbakwe Airport, Owerri were designed , built and installed by him, making the airport the first in the country to utilize locally manufactured switch years. The installation of the precision Approach Path Indicator (APPI), which guides an on-coming Aircraft to glide down to the touch zone of the Airport’s runway was installed by him.

On January 14, 2006. Engr Emeka Muoma Ezeh, Fnse ascended the “Throne” of the greatest professional body in

as the 25^th Silver President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers. He thus succeeds Engr. Mustapha Bulama, FNSE who has been elevated to the position of the immediate past president (IPP). The official investiture ceremony to mark this occasion took place on 14^th Jan. 2006 at the congress hall, NICON Hotel, Abuja. His predecessor Engr. Bulama, Administered the oath of office. The big and mighty in the Engineering and Non-Engineering sectors of the economy and other nationals were on hand to witness the colourful event.The doyen of Architecture,His Excellency, Dr. Alex Ekwueme, GCON who was the guest speaker of the occasion chaired by Engr. Engr. Emeka Ekwebelem, FNSE BAGS 2001 NPOM AWARD

Engr. Emeka Ekwebelem, FNSE was among the recipients of the Nigerian’s most prestigious wards, the 2001/ 2002 national productivity order of merit award.#Engr. Christopher Emeka Ekwebelem was born at Umuahia Abia State in 1951. He had his primary education at St. Michael’s primary school Rumumasi in Port Harcourt, River State. He also attended National High school Arondizuogu, Imo State. In 1973 he enrolled at the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) Enugu, where he obtained the Higher National Diploma (HND) in Electrical/ Electronics in 1977. His compulsory one year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) was with then National Electric power Authority (NEPA) after which he joined the Nigeria Engineering Works, Port Harcourt as Production Engineer. He later moved to Imo State where he joined the services of Imo State Glass industry as project Electrical engineer. Because of his continuous pursuit of professional laurels with zeal, mission and vision he got admitted into Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE). This great feat was all Engr. Ekwebelem needed to propel him to greater heights. Engr. E. C. Iroakazi elected Branch Chairman (2nd term) at the Annual General Meting of the NSE Aba branch, held on 23 Nov 2005, Engr. E. C. Iroakazi, FNSE was elected for the 2nd term chairman of the branch. Other selected to run the affairs of the branch for the next two years were:

I his post election speed, Engr. E. C. Iroakazi thanked the returning officer, Engr. A. N. Agbai , FNSE for the job well done and the entire membership of the branch for the confidence reposed in the new elected officers. He appreciated the contributions of the immediate past Exco under the chairmanship of Engr. C. O. Anameje, MNSE and promised to lead the branch to great height. He also promised members of dedicated and dynamic technical sessions.

At the general meeting of the branch held on February 27, 2006, the branch Chairman, Engr। E. C. Iroakazi, FNSE ...unfolded the action plans of the NEW EXCO for the year 2006. He assured members that if the proposed plans were accepted and implemented accordingly, the branch would attain an enviable height comparable among the branches. The action plans include:1.Production of comprehensive membership directory to effectively communicate with members and for proper accountability.2. Institution of group Dynamics Competition award to encourage active participation of the branch come next AGM/Conference of NSE –Gateway 2006. 3. Encouraging the senior members to participate in the activities of the branch through VIP’S assignments. 4. Intensifying the membership drive by appealing to both public and private organization to implement the provisions of COREN Decree on the registration of engineers in their employment.5. Ensuring the organization of a maiden memorial lecture of the branch including the maiden edition of The Aba Engineer. 6. Ensuring that the branch moves to its secretariat . 7.
